[LB016281], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Arnold Henry White, Edison Electric Light Co Ltd, May 7th, 1883

Editor's Notes

I am in receipt of your fvaor of the 24th. of April, enclosing orders No. 458, 462 and 463. With reference to these orders I notice that you state the goods are to be delivered n London within 30 days from date of order carriage paid. I would remind you that all our goods have been shipped F. O. B. and I do not think I can get any better terms for you. With reference to your complaint about Bergmann & Co's prices they will I am sure give you as good prices as they give to our companies here notwithstanding that your order is very small and our home companies are in the habit of ordering in very large quantities. Of course it is impossible to get the goods to London within 30 days from the date of order. With reference to the Armington & Sims engines, our home companies pay cash for these engines immediately they are shipped from Armington & Sim's shops. When I order engines from you I do exactly the same and inasmuch as you are not in the habit of remitting until you get invoices I am out of money from two weeks to a month. I mention this to show you how impossible it is to get you any such discount as you desire. I would remind you that in buying these goods for you I simply act as your agent and make no money whatever out of the transaction myself and I invariably get you exactly the same terms that our home companies are in the habit of getting. The demand for Armington & Sims engines is so great that the A. & S. Co. are practically able to make their own terms. I consider, however, that we get the engines very cheap and so long as the prices are such as they are at present, I cannot see that any discount can be expected or that any alteration in the terms of payment can be made. Before receiving the above referred to order for engines I had received your cable cancelling the same. I shall therefore do nothing in the matter until you write me further.
