Title
[LB016284], Letter from Samuel Insull to H D Caswell, May 7th, 1883
Editor's Notes
Referring to your favor of the 1st. inst. to Mr. Edison, if you had an electric motor to run a boat it would be necessary to have a steam engine to run the electric generator to generate the current for the purpose of operating the motor. The only other means of running the electric motor would be to use a storage battery but this would be very expensive and not reliable and furthermore it would be necessary to have a steam engine and an electric generator to charge the storage batteries. For the purpose you speak of, I do not think that you can do any better than to get a small steam engine and run your boat by steam.
