- In reply to your favor of the 18th inst. I would state that our overhead system is in no wise effected by lightning. We use a metallic circuit throughout and it is only where the ground circuit is used that lightning can do any damage at all. In telegraphing, when it is impossible to do anything owing to lightning it is the practice to connect up the wires in metallic circuit where the operators experience no trouble whatever. We have had a number of severe storms since we started the village plant at Roselle but at no time has our system been effected by lightning. Mr Flemming is entirely in the wrong if he thinks it impossible to run electric light wires overhead.##Of course it is better to use the underground system but as this is considerably more costly than the overhead there are many places that would be absolutely [debarred] from the advantage of electric light if we could not use overhead wires.
