Title

[LB020257D], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Straight Line Engine Co, John Edson Sweet, May 5th, 1885

Editor's Notes

"Referring to yours of the 23rd. ulto., which was unfortunately overlooked, I would state that if any such assertions have been made by the agents of rival engine companies, they have done so entirely without my authority, as the performance of your engine has, so far as I can find out, been highly satisfactory, when tests have been made on it by Mr. Batchelor. I am quite willing to give you some such letter as you speak of. Of course our tests of the engine have been confined entirely to the shops at Goerck Street. The reason that we have not made any of the engines there is that ta great many changes have taken place in connection with the management of the Edison light business, since I first entered into negotiations with your, and I have found it impracticable so far to further extend my manufacturing enterprises by adding that of engine building to what we are already doing. I think that you would do well to enter into communication with Mr. E. H. Johnson, President of the Edison Co. for Isolated Lighting, 65 Fifth Avenue, New York, as he has full control of the business at the present time. I do not doubt but what you could arrange with him to have the Straight Line engine included in the list of engines catalogued by his Company, that is after tests have been made satisfactory to him. The Edison Companies are not allied to any particular engine. What they want is the cheapest and best, whether it be build by the Armington & Sims, The Straight Line Engine Co. or any other company. Could you use the pattern for the 10 x 12 engine?. The are the property of the Edison Machine Works, and I think Mr. Batchelor would like to dispose of them to you. If you are inclined to purchase them, I shall be glad if you will enter into communication with him."
