Title

[LB021280], Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to Thomas Pike, February 13th, 1886

Editor's Notes

I have received all your letters of recent dates relating to phone matters and will deal with each later in the day. At present, I wish only to speak of those condensers at Belleville. ##You say B.V. has a condenser around No. 1{?} line Y.T.R.{?}. I understand from your letter that he has connected this in his own office and not at the station. If this is so, he has made a mistake because he seldom or never uses the line, and the place for the condenser is that point at which contact is made and broken on the interfering wire. ##The condensers for Nos. {---------} at Belleville should be located at the station and, instead of plugging in the full capacity of each (100 sheets), he should see if he can do with a lesser number in connection with heavier weights. ##In regard to these insights, you will have no difficulty in getting them made. You had better get some made of steel in this shape {doughnut-shaped drawing in original}, the same as you are at present using, only heavier. You can test with the brass weights until you find the proper one to use at any point and then have a steel ring made which you can substitute. There is a clear ring to the steel not possessed by the brass. I will write you at length by next mail.
