Title

[LB021388A], Letter from Samuel Insull to Compagnie Continentale Edison, March 9th, 1886

Editor's Notes

Your two favors of the 26th of January and the 9th of February, addressed to the Edison Electric Light Company of Europe, and referring to the subject of Italian patents for which prolongations have been applied for by Mr. Lucchini of Rome, have been submitted to Mr. Edison, who has been absent from the city for sometime past, and he has requested me as his Attorney in fact to write you explaining that the sole object in applying for the prolongations of the patent sets referred to by you was in order to protect his American patents, the period of which are affected by foreign patents if the latter are allowed to lapse. The reason for applying for these prolongations in the name of Edison Electric Light Company of Europe is that so far as we were aware, the title of record of these patents still stood in the name of the Edison Electric Light Company of Europe. Mr. Edison begs me to assure you that he has no ulterior object with relation to these matters and is actuated entirely by the desire to protect his interest here and had no idea whatever that you would view this matter in any way hostile to your company and its licensees. Mr. Edison is anxious that you should allow Mr. Lucchini to carry through the application for prolongation and he subjects himself to transfer such prolongations to either yourselves or the Italian Company as you may direct. The paper which you ask the Edison Electric Light Company of Europe to return is now in the hands of the Edison Electric Light Company of America. I will obtain the same from their officials in the course of a day or two and immediately mail it to you.
