Laboratory reports Martin making carbons. Several mixtures {-----} gives trouble. Hamilton--six condensers, measures them; Monday left {----} Force instruments and municipal lamp refinement{?}. Bates cancelled order; Baltimore--Harper's Ferry were substitutes Baltimore--Hagerston, hundred six miles, five phone offices, sixteen{?} condensers; also Baltimore--Harrisburg, eighty-five miles, three phone offices, three condensers. Tate tested both circuits, no induction. Commence installing phones Monday. Our Canadian operator reports {-----} inspected. Canadian circuits much pleased. ##Randel{?} Chicago reports induction from regular work worse than Staten Island. Thinks must raise margin again before trusting grasshopper hands average operator. Is experimenting, anticipates success. Upton appealed law last resort. Boston Block plant, two thousand lights contracted, short overhead wires, underground permit not yet obtained. Isolated business impending{?} contract closed{?}, thousand light block plant Cincinnati. Johnson ordered Batchelor to make wooden model, probably cost thousand dollars; shall it go ahead? Johnson says tested Twenty-Fourth Street Sprague motor, success exceeded expectations in power, ease of control, {---} sparking. Further tests with car this week. Rowland's report highly endorses Sprague's methods.
