Title
[LB027780], Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to Walter J McConnell, January 17th, 1889
Editor's Notes
"In reference to your letter of 16th instant, the best way for you to secure the instruction which you seek in connection with the phonograph at this Laboratory, is to obtain a letter from either the North Am. Phonograph people or an Officer of the sub-Company by which you are to be employed in the future. It is Mr. Edison's intention to instruct any men who are sent over here by the N.Y. phonograph people, with the view of educating them as experts. The kind of instruction that you want cannot be obtained in the Lecture Room. You want to go into the Assembling Room at the Phonograph Works, and become thoroughly familiarized with the construction of the phonograph. I do not think you had an opportunity of familiarizing yourself with the different parts when you were at the Laboratory before." Yours very truly, AO Tate
