"Your letter of 27th instant to Mr. Edison has been received. The phonograph outside of the United States and Canada is controlled by Col. Geo. E. Gouraud, upon whose order only can we ship phonographs to foreign countries. I may say that Col. Gouraud at the present time is engaged in getting his agencies in shape, providing for representation in the different countries which he controls, and I do not know whether he would be willing to send a machine to Panama, unless he has a representative in that country. We receive numbers of orders for phonographs to be sent into Col. Gouraud's territory, and are obliged to refer them all to him, as he alone can take action on them. You can communicate with him direct. His address is, 'Little Menlo, Upper Norwood, Surrey, England.'" Yours truly, A.O. Tate
