Title

[LB028571], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to George Edward Gouraud, March 7th, 1889

Editor's Notes

"I have received your letter of the 16th instant, in regard to the working of foreign patents. ### I am not in possession of information with respect of the requirements of the different foreign countries in this connection, and therefore, do not wish you to rely upon me for the same. You should obtain definite information from your agent in each country of what is required there, and then I can render you any assistance that is necessary. ### I observe that you have received notice from Austria that manufacture must commence on Case 84 in April next, but you fail to state to what extent will be necessary for us to carry on manufacture in that country. I am informed that the working usually required for patents in European countries is almost nominal, and usually consists in having perhaps one of the patented machines made and operated, and procuring a certificate to that effect, but I am not aware where or not this is the case, in Austria. You should advise me very fully as to exactly what is to be done in Austria, and from time to time in each of the other foreign countries under your supervision." Yours very truly, [signed] TAE
