Title
[LB028800], Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Co, Charles L Selden, March 25th, 1889
Editor's Notes
"I have shown Mr. Edison your letter to myself under date 21st instant, in which you say that you received a communication from Mr. Gililand dated November 10th, 1885, stating that the rate of $20 per year per set would be the figure for the phonoplex. Mr. Edison says that you must be mistaken. He informs me that when he first brought the phonoplex out he thought that the price of the instruments would be about $20 per set, and that either you or Mr. Gilliland must have received the erroneous impression that this $20 referred to royalty. Mr. Edison says that he never contemplated a royalty on the instruments themselves, his decision in this respect from the very outset being to charge a royalty of $100 per circuit, regardless of the number of sets of instruments employed in connection with the same. His original memorandum to Mr. Bates, outlining a proposition for the B. & O., mentioned a royalty of One Hundred Dollars per year per circuit. If you have any memoranda substantiating your understanding of this matter, can you not send it to me or forward me copies of it? Of course we want to do whatever has been agreed upon, but your impressions and Mr. Edison's are not the same." Yours very truly [signed] A.O. Tate
