Title
[LB029202], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Gustav Franke, April 23rd, 1889
Editor's Notes
"I have your letter of 16th instant, in reply to mine by the 9th, relative to the cabinets which you made for me. ### In ordering these cabinets we were particular to inform you as to the size of the hole which was to be out on day of same. You were also instructed to make the [unclear] out of four pieces of wood, glued together, instead of which you made them solid, [unclear] to order. Had you followed our instructions in making the cabinets, the tops would not have split, and the explanation which you offer in your letter under reply relative to this trouble is very unsatisfactory and will, not hold for a moment. Do you think it is impossible to cut a hole such as we make in our phonograph cabinet without the wood splitting? If so, how is it that the tops of sewing machine tables do not split, and they have holes out in them of about the same size as ours? Furthermore, the tables of your cabinets are splitting, not upon the end where the hole is, but on the end where the table is split. ### Please let me hear from you further in regard to this matter in return mail."
