Title

[LB030229], Letter from West Orange Laboratory, Alfred Ord Tate to Edison Machine Works, Samuel Insull, June 5th, 1889

Editor's Notes

"We beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 3rd instant, in regard to insulating compound, contents of which we have carefully noted. ### We are sending you to-day, per U.S. Express, several samples of insulating compound, which we can supply for 30 cents per 1$., and this price [unclear] of course, we reduced if it is found desirable to mix any inert substances with it. The specific gravity of this compound is 3 to 3.5, copper being 8.95[?]. ### We are also sending you some samples of wire. It will not be necessary for you to report on these samples, unless you consider the wire suitable for your use. We have tested sample No. 604 very carefully, and it shows a perfect insulation after being kept in wet [unclear] at an electrical pressure of 110 volts for 60 hours. It has been kept at a temperature of 210 F. for 25 days; and it does not flame in the least when subjected to a current of 100 amperes [unclear] destroyed. The wire upon which these samples of insulation were put, was supposed to be fairly well insulated to begin with, no if slight cracks occur in the fireproof compound. It is hoped that it will not render the wire useless. ### The black paint on sample No. 579 is, we think, something new. We will send you a few more samples of wire in a short time." Yours very truly, Laboratory of Thos. A. Edison
