- Editor's Notes
- [TLS] I have the esteemed letter of your Director under date October 23rd, and in reply beg to say that the cylinder of the standard phonograph is not sufficiently long to take a continuous dictation for twenty-five minutes. It will take continuous speech for five minutes, which is equal to one thousand words or ten ordinary letters. It has been my intention, and I still desire to present you with one of these instruments as a personal gift from myself. I have given instructions for a special machine to be prepared for you, which I trust you will be kind enough to accept with my compliments. I will advise you when it is ready to go forward. I regret very much not having had the pleasure of meeting you when I was in GERMANY. My time was so limited that I failed to see a number of my friends whom I had hoped to meet." Very truly yours, [signed] TAE
