March 31/90 Tho R. Lombard Esq V.P North Am Phono Co 160 Broadway New York Dear Sir: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter 29th inst. Enclosing copy of a communication addressed to yourself by the Genl Manager of the Phono Co in regard to an exhibition of the Phonograph at the Orange Club. I presume the occasion referred to is March 8th not 15th as MR. Smotj states. The request for this loan came to me in the form that a number of [illegible[ business men of Orange and New York members of the Club, desired to see the practical operation of the machine; that the entertainment at the club was the last of the season and that an opportunity of bringing these gentlemen together would not be had again for many months: the invitations to members were then being issued and acting up a hastily formed idea that the N.J. Co. would be pleased to have advantage taken of an opportunity of which there was not time to inform them. I consented to the loan of an instrument. I am so clearly responsible for an error of judgement that I will cheerfully make such amend as the N.J. Co may desire by forwarding them a check for rentals or otherwise as they may indicate. Meanwhile will you kindly assure them that this business will not again be interfered with from the Laboratory in effecting which I have issued rigid instructions. Yours truly, A.O. Tate
