Francis R. Upton Esq., General Manager
Edison Lamp Company, Harrison N.J.
Dear Sir:-
I beg to enclose herewith the correspondence which was returned to this office, with your letter of 3rd instant, suggesting that we put the short-hand notes on another sheet, in view of our utilization of the "Phonograph Dictation" Stamp.
Your suggestion is good one. We would remark, however, that the correspondence of the Laboratory is very voluminous, and in the handling of it the Phonograph is used to a large extent, in fact, almost exclusively, the three machines which we have in the office here, being severely taxed.
Now and then when our Phonograph blanks run out, we find it convenient to avail ourselves of the stenographic ability at our service.
The letter returned by you was transcribed from the Phonograph. The shorthand notes on the Pottsville letter consists of the four words "send to Lamp Company," and they embody the instructions given by me to m assistant, the ultimate form of the letter being left to his intelligence. Some day when you are at the Laboratory, drop in to Room 15, and see the rapid transcriptions which are constantly being made from Phonograph dictation.
We installed a new Phonograph in the Office today and are going to invest in another rubber stamp.
Very truly yours,
A.O. Tate
Private Secretary
