April 11th, 1890 Alexander Coles, Esq., No. 106 West 55th Street, New York City Dear Sir:- Mr. Edison has received your letter of 2nd instant, in regard to increasing the speed of ocean steamers, by decreasing the friction of the vessel passing through the water. He has made a number of experiments in this direction, but they do not work exactly as you think. All that is effected by applying the electric current, is to keep the bottom of the vessel perfectly clean. Yours very truly, A.O. Tate Private Secretary
