January 21, 1891.
Frank K. Spence, Esq.
,
Messrs. Peter Spence & Sons,
Manchester, England,
Dear Sir:-
Mr. Edison has read your letter of 7th instant, in which you ask his opinions as to the practicability of exhibiting a speaker’s utterances from moment to moment to an open air audience of great magnitude. In reply he says that this could be done by writing or printing the speech on transparent continuous strips, and passing the same through a large magic lantern, which would project the written or printed words on a screen. The letters would appear say a foot square, and the audience could read the words as they were passed slowly along.
Yours very truly,
A O Tate
Private Secretary.
