January 28, 1891. Henry M. Howe, Esq., #287 Marlborough Street, Boston, Mass. Dear Sir:- Replying to your letter of 26th instant to Mr. Edison, he desires me to say that he has no apparatus which will separate wet sand. Some years ago Mr. Edison tried to separate the beach sand of Long Island, but it was found that it cost about 60 cents a ten to dry it. On a large scale it could be dried for very much less. Mr. Edison some time ago applied for patents for drying sand by means of a centrifugal machine. His experiments in this connection showed that a tone of sand could be dried in about two minutes – dry enough for separating. There is no literature on the subject of Mr. Edison’s Ore Milling process. Yours very truly, A. O. Tate Private Secretary.
