February 12, 1891. Hon. Wm. Henry Trescot, No. 1418 L Street, Washington, D.C. Dear Sir:- I beg to return herewith letter of the [Ron.?] Patrick [Egan?], U.S. Minister, Santiago, Chili, addressed to yourself, the same having accompanied your letter of 8th of January last to Mr. Edison. The latter delayed replying to your communicating pending the receipt of definite information from the Edison United Phonograph Company with relation to the presentation of a phonograph to the National University of Chili. As I previously informed you, the presentation in question must be made through the United Company, without whose authorization Mr. Edison is powerless [so?] act in the matter. He has written to the Company on the subject several times, impressing upon them the desirability of forwarding the instrument to Chili at once, but as yet he is without definite advice. I enclose herewith copy of the last communication which was sent to the Company, dated January 27th, 1891, and to which we have as yet received no reply. Yours truly, A. O. Tate Private Secretary.
