Dr. Georges Bayles, Orange, N.J.
Dear Sir:-
On my return to the Laboratory a few days ago after an absence of several weeks I find your letter of 16th instant on the subject of an endowment fund for the Orange Memorial Hospital. I regret very much that it is impractical for me to subscribe to this fund. I already have a very heavy drain on my resources. Moreover, I need every cent I can spare in my experimental work for experimenting in directions which are hopeless of pecuniary returns. My Laboratory expenses are now so high I cannot afford to add to them. I think the rich merchants and business men are the ones who should subscribe to the Hospital fund.
Yours truly,
Thos A Edison
