{Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to Sherburne Blake Eaton} April 28, 1891. Major S.B. Eaton Edison Building, Broad Street, New York City. Dear Sir:- I enclose herewith answers to questions asked by the Department State Board of Assessors with respect to the Edison Phonograph Works. I have spread these on a separate sheet, so that you might put them in different shape on the return itself if you consider it desirable. The return should be signed by Mr. Insull as Treasurer of the Works. I wish you would kindly give me all the particulars in regard to the increase of the Capital from $600,000.00 to $1,200,000.00. The proper entries have not been made on the books. In answering the question with respect to the amount of capital invested in manufacturing, I have entered the full amount of the stock that has been issued. You of course understand that a portion of this stock was given Mr. Edison for the right of manufacturing. The balance of the stock which was sold for cash, represents straight investment. The assessed valuation of the Works property is not high, but is fully compensated for by the rate of taxation, which varies between 2% and 3% of the amount assessed. Yours very truly,
