379 H. F. January 12, 1892, H.P. Dwight, Esq., Vice President & Gen, Manager, The Great North-Western Telegraph Company Toronto, Canada. Dear Mr. Dwight:- I am very much obliged for your letter of the 5th instant to which is attached a communication from your Superintendent of Supplies, Mr. Cox, concerning the cost of operating the Edison Lalande battery as compared with the cost of Gravity cells. Mr. Cox is entirely in error in his assumption that the displacement of 2732 gravity cells would require 850 cells of Edison Lalande batteries. The fact that we were able to displace 400 gravity cells by Edison Lalande cells in connection with the wires which are now supplied with current from the latter does not indicate that the reminder of the gravity battery will require to be displaced with appropriate number of Edison Lalande cells. If you will be kind enough to furnish me with a list of the wires taking batteries from your Toronto Office, outside of these which are now batteried with Edison Lalande cells, I will prepare a correct estimate of cost and submit the same to you. All your quad and duplex wires can be operated from one battery, and it can be arranged that other wires can take current from the same source. I trust before taking further action you will permit me to submit these figures. Yours very truly. A.O. Tate Private Secretary. I would like to have a similar and separate list of the wires now batteried with Edison Lalande cells. These should show (1) length of wires in miles (2)approximate resistance AOT [illegible text] enc.
