December 10, 1891.
Prof. J. Jay Watson,
No. 253 West 33rd Street
New York City.
Dear Sir:-
With reference to your letter of 7th instant, Mr. Edison is not connected with any of the Phonograph Companies, and cannot therefore assist you in obtaining a phonograph from the New York Company for the purpose of recording thereon the tones of Mr. Bull’s violin. The phonograph in this country is controlled by the North American Phonograph Co., #34 & 16 Morris St., Jersey City, N. J., and it might be possible to obtain an instrument from them for the purpose mentioned.
If you particularly desire it, however, we could arrange to send an expert with a phonograph to the musical reception which you say Mr. Bull will probably have during the present month, and the desired records could then be secured; although we would much prefer to have yourself and Mr. Bull visit the Laboratory, as we have every facility for taking records in our music room here, and the results would be much better than if they were taken elsewhere. If you wish I will have one of our experts call and see you in regard to the matter.
Yours truly,
A. O. Tate
Private Secretary.
