Dear Sir:-
Mr. Edison has read your letter of 4th instant and in reply has instructed me to inform you that he regrets he is unable to furnish you with a gun cotton engine. He says that to construct such as engine would require a considerable amount of experimenting, but that a good engineer ought to be able to design one. Some time ago Mr. Edison conducted at the Laboratory a few fundamental experiments on this direction but the experiments were never brought to a completion and had to be abandoned in favor of other important work which was more pressing.
Yours truly,
A. O. Tate
