Orange, N. J. February 19, 1892. Samuel Insull, Esq., Dear Sir:- I have received a copy of specifications drawn up by the Engineers of the Northern Pacific R. R. In reply I would state that while it would be a very desirable thing to obtain a Locomotive as specified, I think it would be a waste of money for me to undertake its design, as I do not feel myself competent to devise a reliable Locomotive upon the lines laid down. [Here follows a sentence which is indecipherable. Its purport was that Mr. Edison would not consider further the matter of designing the proposed Locomotive]. T. A. Edison P. S.
