Orange, N. J. February 19, 1892. Samuel Insull, Esq., Dear Sir:- I have received copy of specifications drawn up by the Engineers of the Northern Pacific R. R. In reply I would state that while it would be very desirable thing to obtain a Locomotive as specified, I think it would be a waste of money for me to undertake its design, as I do not feel myself competent to devise a reliable Locomotive upon the lines laid down. (Here follows a sentence which is indecipherable. Its purpose was that Mr. Edison would not consider further the matter of designing the proposed locomotive). (Signed) T. A. Edison. P.S. My impression is that some one of the designer of two Companies could easily devise a Locomotive upon the lines of the specifications, but (the remainder of the sentence cannot be made out).
