Mr. Edward A. Smith
No. 1 Broadway,
New York City.
Dear Sir:-
Reply to your letter of 12th instant has been unavoidably owing to the absence of Mr. Edison.
In regard to your question relative to what a magnetic ore having 353 of metallic iron can be crushed and separated for per ton by Mr. Edison’s process, Mr. Edison directs me to say to you that it would depend upon the size of the mill and the amount invested. If triple expansion engines were used, and everything [illegible] with 500 tons crude ore per 20 hours, it could be milled for 75 cents per crude ton. But the cost diminished greatly when the mill is a large one, like ours at Ogden, which has a capacity of 2,000 tons daily.
Yours truly,
A.O. Tate
Private Secretary.
