Feb. 15th, 1894. E. J. Woodward, Esq., Eversley, The Avenue, Eastbourne, Eng. Dear Sir:-- Your letter of 20th ult. has been received by Mr. Edison, who directs me to say in reply that he can use clear Ceylon sapphires of any color. He can purchase these in New York from jews at $2.75, and they, of course, allow him to select the sapphires best suited for his purpose. He suggests that if you could ship your lot of sapphires to a New York house or to [us?], him Edison direct, he could pick out those that would cut to the best advantage to the peculiar shape needed by him; he would return the balance. There is no duty on sapphires and Mr. Edison would pay $2.50 per ounce for those taken. Yours very truly, AO Tate Private Secretary. M.
