Dec. 28, 1894. Edwin G. Bates, Esq., Vice Pres’t., Bates Manufacturing Co., #44 Broad st., N. Y., Dear sir: - We duly received your letter of the 20th, enclosing statements for the month of November. In looking over the trial balance, I notice several items that are not entirely clear to me, upon which I would like some further information, GENERAL EXPENSE. This account stands debited with $37385.11. Will you please let me know what period this covers? EXPERIMENTS. This account is charged with $[3424?].05. Will you please let me know how this is made up, and also what period it covers? and by whom [the work was done] SUSPENSE. This account stands debited $349.54. I assume that this represents uncollectable accounts, but I should like to be enlightened as to exactly what it does represent. I should also like to know from you the list prices that you charged for automatic hand numbering machines and line dating machines, and also the very best discount that you allow and after allowing this discount, is there any further discount allowed to agents, salesmen, or in fact any further commission that would tend to bring the price down. In other words, what I want to know is what is th the absolute lowest price on automatic numbering machines and line dating machines. Yours very truly, Thos A Edison
