March 8th 1895 Thos Sutherland Esq Fort Gratiot. Mich: Friend Sutherland:- Your favor of the 19th ult, came duly to hand and in reply I beg to state that you struck me just at the wrong time. I am building a large Works at Edison. N.J for concentrating Ore and over $17 [illegible text] 000, has been spent, and during the panic all the parties in [illegible text] lost their money and I have had to carry the whole [illegible text] through the panic to prevent its failure, this has [made me?] desperately short of money so much so that I have even mortgaged my Laboratory and until this Mill starts I cannot spare anything. Nobody has any confidence in anything so I have to carry it myself. Yours truly Thos A Edison R[andolph]
