Messrs. Houston & Co.,
22 Platt St.,
N.Y. City.
Dear Sirs: -
Replying to your favor of August 27th, I would say that in my opinion electricity will supercede steam in a great many cases as the motive power on the Railroads of the country. I do not think, however, that the hardened copper rail will ever be adopted as the best means of communicating the power.
As to the effect of electricity on the output of copper, I cannot say whether electricity will ever be extended so as to [illegible text] the percentage of the output of copper you mention, but [think?] the present use of copper for electricity will constantly increase and large quantities will be used as electric lighting becomes more of an investment.
Yours very truly,
Thos. A. Edison
R[andolph].
