March 21- 1896 T.J. McConnell Esq Menlo Park N. J. Dear Sir :- Your favor of the 17th inst, came duly to hand and in reply I beg to advise you that I have seen Mr Edison and he does not care to lease the place at Menlo Park for five years because if he had a chance to sell it he could not do so until the lease expired [but?] Mr Edison says you can have the use of them [until he?] sends you word that he wants them. No one has permission to plant any of Mr Edison’s property at Menlo Park and you have entire charge of [it?], and donot let anyone plant anything unless you hear from Mr Edison or myself. If you want to plant the place for yourself you are at liberty to do so but donot allow any outsider to plant any of [it?]. Mr Edison says you may tear down the old [illegible] buildings to repair the large ones – [Illegible] see you in a week or so. Yours truly J. F. Randolph
