Title

[LM003069], Letter from Samuel Insull to Edward Hibberd Johnson, March 21st, 1882

Editor's Notes

Please sign enclosed patent assignment with witnesses so it can be recorded in Pat Offc. All devices patented by Bergmann are to be done so jointly; I arranged for this with TAE's consent. Rcd socket from you and gave to Bergmann, in TAE's absence. Also note your comments on Insulite; pls send specimen. Stocks are low now; no market for Illuminating and no transactions for months; also for Ore Milling & European. Holzer appointed Super of lamp factory under Upton, who gave him 3% interest. Now he talks bigger than ever about what *he* has done, *his* improvements, etc. but knows no more about practical lamp mfg than does Barney the night watchman. "I begin to think from what I see of others that to m ake money with Edison you must blow your own trumpet so loudn that Edison will give you a big slice to quiet you in other words fancy yourself one hell of a fellow & the great mogul will do likewise." Things going OK here; Kruesi's work goes along quietly. [pages out of order here. Rwy nearly complete. Can use different armatures to attain different speeds. Carried 39 people in a car @ 25mph on Sat, armature as cool as could be. Goerck St. now building slow freigh loco. TAE had stamp mill put up behind machine shop for milling expts. Dynamos being completed at Goerck St. They'll cost more than they would if we had a good style of superintendence there. TAE thinks of selling works to EELight Co; it would turn a nice profit if it had a man who attended to his work properly. Central station structure for boilers, coal conveyers, etc. all ready. Oregon steamship Co building new vessel to be fitted up in "palatial" style by TAE light. We're sending out a new plant for the Columbia; various docks and shipyards to be lighted, too. Expect TAE back about 1st of next month [WHERE IS HE?]
