October 13th, 1900 Mr. W.S. Mallory, Vice Pres Orange, N.J. Dear Sir: We herewith enclose press copy of letter from Bethlehem Steel Company, in which they complain about the phosphorous in briquettes, and ask for a reduction in the price. We find in looking over your statement of analysis, that you shipped on the 22nd,m 24th and 25th of September, but that you give no analysis for phosphorous until the shipments of the 26th. We do not know whether this indicates that the shipments prior to the 26th were high in phosphorous, or whether they were not analyzed, in any event, the Bethlehem Company seems to have caught on them promptly. They do not state whether the shipments commencing on the 26th are satisfactory or not. We have written them assuming that they [illegible]. We should prefer McCreath or Booth, Garrett & Blair to Porter W, Shive, simply because we do not know the letter chemist so well. Yours very truly, (Signed) Pilling & Crane
