Abstract

Discusses father's giving up business and mortgage on father's house then says "I have a mortgage of #3500 on my house here for which I have to pay 7 per cent per annum, in fact a `mortgage' is an institution which no true American can dispense with, and he will not buy a farm if it has not a mortgage on it, that apparently giving it its value."
