Title
[MBN012092], Technical Note, Charles Batchelor, February 22nd, 1889
Editor's Notes
Edison got hurt today whilst working on substances for fine tar carbons. He has been experimenting on these a great deal during the last 12 months with Kinney, Joe Force & Hipple. Now he has Fessenden on it all the time in Room 4. [clipping pasted in: Mr. Edison's Eyes in Danger. A Narrow Escape from Serious Injury by an Explosion, dated March 2, 1889: Thomas A Edison met with a severe accident on Saturday evening, of which the facts have just leaded out, despite the efforts of the laboratory employes to suppress them. He was engaged in making a chemical analysis, adding a strong solution to the substances under investigation, when, without the slightest warning, the mass exploded. The flames flashed up hisface, singing his eyebrows and scorching his hair. Some of the acid struck him on the face and eyes and caused severe and painful burns.##With gret presence of mind Mr. Edison plunged his face in a basin of water and prevented serious injuries: as it was, his face and eyes were much inflamed and extremely painful on Monday, but since then he has steadily improved and now shows but little trace of the accident. Those familiar with the facts say that he had a narrow escape from losing his sight.
