Title

[MU059], Letter from Edward Hibberd Johnson to Francis Robbins Upton, May 2nd, 1882

Editor's Notes

Your various letter rcd and subjects noted but won't answer in detail. "First, you seem to be under the impression that the companies should do something to assist the lamp factory in its experimentation. This is wrong. The only way that such assistance can be had is to obtain from them large orders for lamps which have passed beyond the stage of experimentation and a price therefo which will not only leave a fair margin of profit but a little extra which you coul credit to the experimental account." Think 50 cents per lamp should be sufficient. We want lamps of higher cp for streets, etc where grouping large numbers of lamps is insufficient. Effect of single bright lamp is better than several together with same aggregate cp. With such a lamp we could compete with gas AND arc lights; you should spend the money and time to perfect such a 50 cp lamp ASAP, as successful street lighting is criterion of adopting a particular system in England. As to Faure Battery lamps, would be glad to have some of more practical utility than those you've sent; those you describe would sell. The 32 lcp lamps you send are already blackened in the globe! Running 16 and 32 on Viaduct--very beautiful. Just sent TAE big order for lamps and machinery; expect more to follow. Very pleased with cylindrical glass in lamp. In the 1 or 2 of these you've sent, the blackening has been at the top instead of near clamps. This is advantageous because it diffuses blackening so it takes longer to become noticed. The glass is imperfect, not fitted well to socket. Both Crystal Palace and Holborn installations working well.
