Title
[MU117], Letter from Edison Lamp Co, Francis Robbins Upton to William Holzer, December 13th, 1887
Editor's Notes
[Letterhead: The Edison Lamp Co.] Reports that there have been lamps arcing, and this is confirmed when looked over the Pump Room records. "Mr. Saxelby feels that the new clamp working only with one current in one way does not have all the gas taken out of it, and that when the current in reversed afterwards that it will make an arc." He talks about times that lamps have arced and the problems that have resulted. Would like to know the cause of the problem and any solutions he may suggest.[TAE Marg: "The cause of arcing is due to crystals of sulphate of copper in clamps near hot part of carbon or on carbon itself. The cause of arcing on new lamps will be one of the clamps not get hot."]
