Title

[N105039], Technical Note, Charles Batchelor, August 4th, 1880

Editor's Notes

"Carbons. On our gas furnace (which works elegantly) [Mott jrnl: furnace set up & tested late July; this is first day of satisfactory operation] we can make an improvement by making it up of bricks mouldeed right shape & binding together so as to allow a little shrinkage and expansion. I find that in our mould sometimes the large weight moves by reason of the small weight sticking this I remedy by putting a pin at X which is made moveable...." Sticking of mould caused by globules of nickel; these sometimes hold up small weight and reduce its pressure causing ends of carbons not to be flat. To remedy, make a mould like this [sketch].
