Editor's Notes

Canvasser's summary notebook for second (NY) district. Give block-by-block numbers of businesses, gas jets, hoistways. p. 10 begins index of canvassing books on hand June 10 1881, indicating which blocks are covered in which books. P. 20-24 listed by canvasser name. pp. 30-46: "Districts and Blocks, with reference to Canvassers Books." For districts 1-5, then into districts 30-35. Misc. calcs follow. P. 50: "General Information. To find particulars of any building.-- Find it on the general plan or map (lithograph), and note the district and Block. Then refer to chart A, where will be found, at the top, the district by number 1 to 38, (from the Battery to 64th St.), and upon the left hand margin the Block numbers; where the Block line meets the District column, the nuimber of the original book written by the canvasser will be found. These books are numbered consecutively upon their reception, on a small gummed label." P. 51: "Changes of Districts. All removals of Blocks from one district to another will be noted upon teh general map by blue figures, and lines; and the number of the block, (as it will be noted in the new district) will be increased by 100, so as not to have any duplicates, and any block bearing a number higher than 100 does so on account of such change." P. 52: "Street numbers In all the streets from 14 to 59 the EVEN numbers are on the SOUTH side." Then odd-even for avenues. P. 60: "Rough estimate of Buildings in 28th Dist--" P. 64: list of men assigned to each district; districts 5, 7, 30, 34. Pp. 70-72 gives list of pigeonholes and drawers for districts.
