"Payne 8 Var. 1. Three reg forms each cont. 3 reg. 16 C.P. bamboo filaments in 1 1/2" gas tube filled with powdered asphalt. The filaments were put in forms without top weights. Raised to 600 [degrees] Fahr. in 8 hours: then plunged in boiling Linseed oil, then cleaned in Turpentine. Carbons came out well preliminarized, smooth straight & black. Were strong-- not rotten. Sent 7 carbons to Lawson to be put through final process-- marked as P. 5.
