Title
[NB002013], Technical Note, Arthur Coyle Payne, June 13th, 1887
Editor's Notes
"Payne No. 4. In Hessian Crucible placed tin & raised it to vivid white heat. Then by means of a tool arranged so that molten metal could strike all parts of fibre at once. Plunged a number of fibres in the crucible. Fibres oxidized. Either enough air clung to or was in the fibres to produce oxidation, or, they being withdrawn while white hot oxidized in the air. Probably oxidized before being withdrawn, as while they were immersed, a light flame played upon surface of metal showing that something was burning. In variation of this experiment where fibre was dipped in so as to carbonize progressively, fibre oxidized almost before touching metal."
