Title

[NB044061B], Technical Note, Arthur Edwin Kennelly, July 6th, 1888

Editor's Notes

Took down meters at 9:0. They had been at work since Monday 25th June 9:30. The current during that time has been on till about 23 o'clock except the 4th & 1st insts and one evening when current was reversed for 5 hours.##Tried the effect of the 1200 volt dynamo on a god--a fox terrier bitch. An alternator was first tried making 20 reversals per second, but owing to the screws in the instrument shot circuiting the terminals, this failed. Therefore tried the direct current. The fore feet of the dog were lapped with dap cotton waste encircled with 2 or 2 turns of bare copper wire. The animal stood on the wooden engine room floor. On reaching an indicated potential of 1400 volts, contact was made, for about 5 seconds. The animal writhed but uttered no yell till the contact was broken. Several fresh contacts killed it beyond question.
