"I next took oxide of Iron ( ) and mixed it in equal parts with fine white sand, the oxide of iron was carried over in a well defined stream separating itself from the sand to say 90% leaving 10% clinging to the sand. This was separated and with a gain of 3 or 4% more oxide of iron when added to the other 96% and a loss consequently of 6% which apparently remained to color the sand being such an impalpable dust"
