Title

[PT032ABY], Patent Application, Thomas Alva Edison, July 29th, 1889

Editor's Notes

[SELECTABLE autograph draft patent appn: phonograph] The object of this invention is to produce a more perfect record of the vibrations produced by sounds on a phonograph, so that more perfect reproduction of the voices from the record is possible. The invention is also applicable to telephones. ## The invention consists in surrounding the whole of one or both sides of the diaphragm with a mobile liquid or its equivalent so that harmonic & extra vibrations of the diaphragm are prevented and also to prevent excessive amplitude of the diaphragm by the fundamental vibrations which cause the weaker vibrations to be attenuated. ## The action of the liquid is to prevent excessive movements of the diaphragm and also deaden the same so that lal extra vibrations except those pure to the voice are obliterated. ## The invention is shewn in fig 1 where it is used in connection with a phonograph. [fig] ## Where the invention is applied to a telephone it is arranged thus as in fig 2 [no drawing] ## Claims. The compound diaphragm. ## The combination with a diaphragm of a liquid or equivalent on both sides of the same for the purposes set forth. ## A telephone transmitter consisting of a diaphragm retarded by a liquid body in control with one or both surfaces. ## The combination of a diagm & retarder of two contact points for opening & closing an electric circuit for transmitting speech. ## Same claims made for phonograph. Mention that equivalents of oil would be any liquid linseed, mustard seed, etc. Multiple un-numbered drawings follow.
