- Not much is known about the cause of the dispute between TAE and Tomlinson. It is possible that the dispute arose over payouts from the Phonograph patent. The dispute has even devided the friends of each party. Tomlinson's friends assert that their dealings have been completely blameless. Both parties seem to be trying to keep as much information from the media as possible.
- Edison alleges that Tomlinson's dealings with the sale of the phonograph are suspicious and might have cost Edison quite a bit of money
