- "A Phonograph Case", New York Journal of Commerce. TAE has entered a complaint in equity against Gilliland and Tomlinson. Edison formed his phonograph company with $1.2 million and TAE owned 11,960 shares at $100 each. Gilliland and Tomlinson were to find a buyer for the rights to the phonograph and sold it for $500,000, whereas TAE estimated its value at $1 million. He suspects that a separate deal allowed $250,000 to be gained by Gilliland and Tomlinson.
- Thomas Edison accuses late legal adviser John C. Tomlinson and electrician/inventor Ezra T. Gilliland of cheating him out of $250,000 in the sale of the phonograph; he sues for the sum
