Company to which sold phonograph negotiated at same time for purchase of Graphophone whos owners knw that if both interests were une one control and choice of machines left impartially [hole in paper] competition their instrument would be ignore and their fact[ory] [hole in paper] great loss Consequently therefore to save themselves they exacte[d from pur]chasing company a fixed sum on each phonograph not as royalty but [hole in paper]ration for a [com]mercial transaction and to make up the loss they anticipated in combin[ing?] [inven]tors statement not correct regarding wax graphophones have been [damaged paper] everywhere for want of utility whole thing absolutely dead [ju]st as they expected Edison
