Title

[X154A4FN], Letter from Edward Hibberd Johnson to Uriah Hunt Painter, December 21st, 1885

Editor's Notes

[Letterhead: Edison Company for Isolated Lighting] "This is too much for me--I will not undertake to handle any such matter for anybody"; no board member will back me in attempt "to bulldoze this thing through"; if all our agents opposed commission decisions as you do we would be a claims court instead of a business office; you care more for money than anything else while pretending not to; as to the N.O. matter, we will be compelled to take a loss; we'll only get $26,000 for what cost us $28,000 and still must pay $2,800 commission to the agent and $1500 to the lawyer; how much do you want me to pay you for services rendered? We expect our agents to assist us and they do as a matter of course; you probably think you're working for no compensation; I won't go to the Board and ask them to do for you what I wouldn't ask for any other agent; you'll get paid eventually; please change the address of your letter and sign it; can't get you shares issued on our understanding, so return instalment certificate.
